9 Best Day Trips from Melbourne You Can't Miss

Melbourne, sitting right on the edge of Port Phillip Bay, is one of those cities that keeps pulling you back. After 12 years of living in Australia, I've lost track of how many times I've visited. From its street art that feels more like outdoor galleries to the buzzing café scene and eye-catching architecture, Melbourne always has something new to offer.

But what if you're itching to break free from the city? I've been there, because as fun as Melbourne itself is, there are tons of brilliant things to do around Melbourne that make it well worth escaping the city limits! Whether you're a local, an expat like me, or just passing through, I've got you covered. Here are my favourite day trips from Melbourne!

1. Take a Scenic Drive on Great Ocean Road

As I've mentioned in other blogs, Melbourne's coastline is like nowhere else - rugged cliffs, wild waves, and views that will make you pull over every chance you get. If you want to see the best of it, jump in the car and hit the Great Ocean Road.

Whether you've got a day or a couple of days, this drive is all about winding around jaw-dropping seascapes and dramatic rock formations. Don't rush it if you don't have to. You'll pass the famous Twelve Apostles - towering rock pillars carved out by the relentless ocean - and Loch Ard Gorge, the haunting site of an old shipwreck.

I've done it a few times, and honestly, the sweet spot is autumn (March to May) - fewer tourists and the weather's cooler but still nice, but it's still a great activity at any time of year. Yes, even winter! It's worth taking your time and soaking in the full stretch of the coast. You'll quickly see why this drive is one of my favourite things to do outside Melbourne.

Don't have a car? No worries, there are loads of top-rated tours that'll take you along the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne without you needing to worry about driving.

2. Explore the Dandenong Ranges National Park

If you're craving fresh air and a change of scenery, head to Dandenong Ranges National Park. It's only a short drive or train ride from the city, but it feels like you've been transported to another world. I usually go in spring (September to November) when the flowers are in bloom and the weather's perfect for hiking.

The 1000 Steps are a must-do, but be ready for a workout! The views are worth it though. And if you're after something more chilled, check out Olinda Falls or just wander the trails - there's something so peaceful about the forest here, and that's why it's one of the best day trips from Melbourne without a car.

If you do prefer to drive here, start early in the morning to snag a parking spot, especially on summer weekends!

3. Phillip Island

If you're after a classic day trip from Melbourne, Phillip Island is hard to beat. Just a two-hour drive from the city, accessible independently or via a guided tour, this island is famous for its wildlife and natural beauty.

The star of the show here is the Penguin Parade, where you can watch hundreds of little penguins waddling back to shore at sunset - an absolute must-see! Phillip Island is also known for its koalas, so don't miss the Koala Conservation Reserve, where you can spot them snoozing in the treetops.

It's not all about the penguins and koalas, though - if you're into surfing, there are great waves at Cape Woolamai, or if you're into motorsport, check out the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.

When it comes to planning your trip, aim for summer (December to February) if you want to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities at their best, but even in winter, the coastal scenery is stunning. This is a favourite day trip option amongst Melbourne working holiday makers, since it's easy and affordable. Pro tip: pack a jacket - it gets windy out there, especially on the coast.

4. Mornington Peninsula

Nowhere mixes relaxation and adventure on a day trip from Melbourne better than the Mornington Peninsula. Known for its stunning coastal walks, vineyards, and thermal hot springs, this spot is just an hour from the city but feels like a world away. If you're into wine you'll be spoiled for choice with top-tier wineries scattered across the region - perfect for a long lunch or a tasting session.

If you're more into nature, don't miss the hike to Cape Schanck, where you'll find a lighthouse and dramatic ocean views. The peninsula is also famous for its beaches, like Sorrento and Rye, ideal for a swim or a paddle in the summer months.

And for ultimate relaxation, a soak in the Peninsula Hot Springs is a must - no matter the time of year.

5. Yarra Valley

Another top wine spot perfect for people who love a scenic drive (and let's be real - that's most of us), the Yarra Valley is a top-notch day trip from Melbourne. It's only about an hour's drive from the city, and once you're there, it's all about rolling vineyards, cellar doors, and fresh country air.

I've visited a few times, and it never disappoints. If you've got the time, stop by Domaine Chandon for some bubbly or pop into one of the smaller, family-owned wineries for a more personal touch. Joining a tour from Melbourne is your best bet for enjoying the wines, gins and chocolates of the Yarra Valley - then you can drink to your heart's content!

And it's not just wine - if you're a foodie, there are plenty of farm-to-table restaurants and local markets to check out here too. I usually recommend visiting in autumn (March to May) for the best weather, but the valley's pretty stunning year-round.

6. Daylesford

Daylesford is your go-to if you're after some serious relaxation. Known for its natural mineral springs and spa retreats, this town is just over an hour from Melbourne and perfect for recharging the batteries.

I've done a few trips here, and the mineral baths at Hepburn Springs are a must-try. If you have time to spare for a bit of exploring as well as chilling, check out Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens or take a wander around Lake Daylesford - both are great for an afternoon in the fresh air.

There's a big focus on wellness here, with lots of boutique shops, galleries, and cafes to explore. Personally, I think this is one of the best day trips from Melbourne in winter as the cool air makes the mineral baths even more inviting, but it's a solid choice any time of year. My tip: book your spa treatments in advance - they fill up fast!

7. Castlemaine

Castlemaine is a bit of a hidden gem, making it one of my favourite unusual day trips from Melbourne. About an hour and a half drive from the city, it's a town with a quirky mix of history and creativity. If you're into gold rush history, you'll love the old buildings and museums dotted around town.

But Castlemaine's not just about the past - it's also got a cool artsy vibe, with plenty of galleries, local craft shops, and cafes where you can easily spend an afternoon. The Botanic Gardens here are great for a stroll, especially in spring, and there's a cracking farmer's market if you're into local produce. Whilst here, be sure to check out the Theatre Royal - it's one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in Australia, and they show everything from indie films to live music.

8. Ballarat

Ballarat is another one of my top recommendations for historical day trips from Melbourne. It's about an hour and a half away by car, and is absolutely steeped in gold rush history.

Sovereign Hill is the big draw - an open-air museum where you can pan for gold, watch live reenactments, and really get a feel for what life was like in the 1850s - making it the perfect place for a day trip from Melbourne with kids! As you can imagine, it's super interactive, making it great for families.

But Ballarat isn't just about the past - it's got a lively arts scene, and the Ballarat Wildlife Park is worth a visit if you're keen on seeing Aussie animals up close. This is another one of the best day trips from Melbourne in winter (June to August), because this is when Ballarat really shines thanks to its famous Winter Festival lighting up the streets.

9. Bellarine Peninsula

The Bellarine Peninsula is perfect if you want a laid-back coastal day trip from Melbourne. Just over an hour's drive away, it's got beaches, wineries, and plenty of spots to relax at. What more could you want?

If you're into seafood, you'll love the fresh catches at places like Queenscliff and Portarlington, and for wine lovers - well, let's just say you won't be disappointed. Jack Rabbit Vineyard is a personal favourite for both the views and the wine. The peninsula is also known for its calm, family-friendly beaches, so it's a great spot to chill out for the day.

And if you're feeling adventurous, take the ferry from Queenscliff over to Sorrento for a bit of extra exploring. Summer is peak season here, so head over in spring or autumn to avoid the crowds but still get great weather.

Whether you've called this city home for years or you're just visiting, there are plenty of seriously great day trips from Melbourne. This list is just a jumping-off point, but it's packed with spots I've loved exploring over the years.
